History

To understand how we got to where we are today, we need to take a trip back to 1986. That’s
when Steve Klassen moved to Kelowna with his young family, leaving behind a career in
construction to pursue something new. By 1989, he began working alongside Linda at Valley
Canvas and Awning, where he quickly picked up the trade—learning sewing, sales, and
installation. Over the next six years, Steve honed his skills and built a solid foundation.

In 1996, ready for the next chapter, Steve partnered with Tom to launch Artistic Awning.
Together, they turned the company into a local leader in the awning industry. After 14 successful
years, Steve sold the business and relocated to Vernon, where he opened Vernon Awning. It
was there that his son-in-law, Winston, joined him to learn the family trade. Though Vernon
Awning thrived, Winston eventually made the decision to return to the Westside to be closer to
home. Vernon Awning closed its doors, but a new passion had been ignited—Winston had
found his future in “another shady industry.”

After many conversations about what was next, Steve and Winston brought their combined
experience to Westside Canvas and Manufacturing, launching a new awning and screen
division. When Kandus—Steve’s niece and the original owner—stepped away to pursue new
adventures, Winston and his wife Carmen took the leap and purchased the company, creating
Westside Canvas and Awning Ltd.

Today, our focus has shifted away from manufacturing and upholstery, zeroing in on what we do
best: high-quality screens, awnings and roll-shutters. Steve is still with us, mentoring the next
generation and passing along his decades of hands-on expertise. With his continued support,
we’re proud to carry on the family legacy—offering custom shade solutions for years to come.

And hopefully, with a bit of luck (and a lot of hustle), we’ll keep up with Steve—the OG: the
Original Awning Guy.
